@gdt wrote:

In anticipation of the forthcoming Openfire version 4.5.0, the Ignite Realtime community is happy to announce the immediate release of version 2.5.0 of the Hazelcast plugin for Openfire!

The Hazelcast plugin adds support for running multiple redundant Openfire servers together in a cluster.

This update is necessary to maintain compatibility with Openfire 4.5.0, and also provides several bug fixes and improvements.

NOTE: Openfire 4.5.0 (including the current beta or a recent SNAPSHOT) is required for this plugin to work. Do not attempt to upgrade to this version of the plugin unless you are running Openfire 4.5.0.

If you are running Openfire 4.5.0, your instance of Openfire should automatically display the availability of the update in the next few hours. Alternatively, you can download the new release of the plugin at the Hazelcast plugin archive page .

Happy 2020 everyone! The Ignite Realtime Community is thrilled to announce the promotion of Openfire version 4.5.0. This is a feature and bug fix release with a number of Jira issues closed denoted in the changelog. We are thankful for the issues found by community users during a beta testing period of this release. If you find any problems with this release, please let us know in the community forums or drop by our web support groupchat.

So what’s in this new release? First, you will notice a new login screen on the administration console like so:
ss

Manassé Ngudia did the excellent work to move the admin console to use the Bootstrap library for a responsive design. With this foundation, we hope to move more parts of the admin console to a responsive design and thus render more favorably on mobile.

@guus and @gdt did heroic work, as always, to squash a number of bugs and greatly improve LDAP support. If you have had trouble in the past with Openfire + LDAP, please consider testing this release out and let us know how it goes!

You can find Openfire release artifacts on the download page and with the following sha1sums:

Openfire Meetings as an alternative to Zoom

$

@Dele_Olajide wrote:

If you are a small and medium business and already have Openfire setup and running for chat and groupchat using Spark, Inverse or Pàdé and you want to provide secure video or audio conferencing with authentication for your users from password-protected chat rooms using permissions and configurations already made to Openfire, then you should be looking at Openfire Meetings.

Also consider Openfire Meetings as an alternative to Zoom if the audio and/or video from your meetings needs to be recorded by participants and later played back from their desktops and mobile devices.without downloading any external software or installing any app on their mobile devices.

First, there are few things you need to know. These include:

  1. Openfire meetings does not work properly with Firefox. It works best with Chromium based apps like Chrome, Edge, Electron and Opera. If this is a dealbreaker for you, please move on and download Zoom.

  2. There a two versions available at Ignite. The official version (0.9.5) combines both the offocus and ofmeet plugin into a single package. It is lagging behind the current versions of the jitsi dependencies. Expect an upgrade soon to the new jitsi videobridge2 implementation.

  3. The second version (0.9.8) is a fork of the first at (0.9.4) and customized for Pade. It has latest versions of all jitsi dependency code and the extra feature to record a conference from the browser.

  4. Openfire Meetings will not work out of the box if your Openfire server is configured to use LDAP. You would need to create the Jitsi focus bot user and give it owner/admin permmissions to the MUC service manually.

  5. Openfire Meetings has minimal network requirements and works out of the box internally on a local area network (LAN) or with a hosted Openfire server on the internet. If your Openfire server is placed behind a NAT and firewall and you want to allow external internet access, then you require some network expertise to configure it. You would need to open a few UDP/TCP ports and provide both the public and private IP addresses of your openfire server.

To use Openfire Meetings version 0.9.8, download from here and upload the ofmeet.jar and offocus.jar plugin files in any order from the admin web console of Openfire. Wait for both to appear in the plugins listing and then complete the following three steps to confirm it is working.

  1. Confirm the focus bot user has logged in ok like this. If not, check log files and get help from the igniterealtime community.

  2. If you have an active focus user, then you can do a quick peer-to-peer test with two browser tabs on your desktop. Open both of them to the same htps://your_server:7443/ofmeet/testconf and confirm that it is showing in the conference summary like this

  3. If you get audio and video, then focus bot user is working ok and XMPP messages are passing around ok. If not, it is back to the log files and help from the community.

  4. To confirm the video-bridge is working, you need to run step 3 again with 3 users. If audio and video stops with third participant, then double check on the network configuration, making sure TCP port 7443 and UDP port 10000 are opened for listening from the openfire server. Otherwise, check the log files and ask for help from ignte-realtime community.

Stay safe and best of luck :slight_smile:

Preparing Openfire for Audio/Video calls with Conversations

$

@guus wrote:

Later this week, the popular Android client Conversations will have an exciting new release that will allow you to make voice and video calls.

For this to work well with your instance of Openfire, it is recommended to make use of a STUN and TURN service. I’ve personally experimented with coturn, which I’ve found easy to use.

After you’ve set up the STUN and TURN service, you’ll need to configure Openfire to expose the availability of this new service to your users. You can do this easily with the External Service Discovery plugin for Openfire.

After you install the plugin, you can add your TURN and STUN services to its configuration, as shown below. This will allow clients to discover the availability of these services!

Take care to read up on the authentication mechanisms that are available in your TURN server, to prevent unrelated third parties from making use of your bandwidth.

That’s all to it!

Smack 4.4.0-alpha5 released

The Ignite Realtime community is pleased to announce the release of Smack 4.4.0-alpha5.

We decided for another alpha release after some minor issues have been found with the last release. Fixes for all found issues are now in 4.4.0-alpha5, and we additionally improved the DNS server lookup mechanism on Android (although, this is an improvement within minidns-android21, not Smack itself, to be precise).

If no major blockers are found, then we will in around 4 weeks create the ‘4.4’ branch in Smack’s git repository and prepare the first beta release. If there is a feature or API change you like to see in Smack 4.4, then you should use that merge window to get your changes into Smack.

jXMPP and MiniDNS 1.0.0 released

We are happy to announce the availability of the 1.0.0 releases of jXMPP and MiniDNS. Release artifacts are now available on Maven Central.

jXMPP

jXMPP is a XMPP base library that provides common functionality required by all kinds of XMPP implementations (servers, clients, components, …). One if its gems in jxmpp-jid, which contains types for JIDs and comprehensive API for them. Remember the second commandment of XMPP development:

Ⅱ) Never shall thou use a String type to represents JIDs.

Check out the javadoc at http://jxmpp.org/releases/1.0.0/javadoc/

MiniDNS

MiniDNS is a DNS library for Android and Java SE. Initially developed to bring native DNSSEC and DANE support to the Java ecosystem, including Android, it is now on the way to becoming a comprehensive DNS library, besides just a resolver library. Of course, it still can be used to perform DNS SRV resource records lookups, as it is common in XMPP. And for DANE verification (which we hope to become commonplace on day).

JSXC web client now available as a plugin for Openfire!

The Ignite Realtime community is happy to announce the immediate availability of a new plugin for Openfire that makes available the JSXC web client to your users!

JSXC is a feature rich web client, which, among others, supports video calls and screen sharing. For more information on its features and usage, please visit its project web page at https://www.jsxc.org

Much like the inVerse and Candy plugins for Openfire, the new JSXC plugin installs a pre-configured version of JSXC in an embedded web server that is ready for use out-of-the-box. Install the plugin, and point your users at the URL where the webclient is available (by default: https://<your-server-name>:7443/jsxc/) and they’re ready to go!

Your instance of Openfire should automatically display the availability of the new plugin in the next few hours. Alternatively, you can download the the plugin directly from the JSXC plugin archive page.

As always, we’d love your feedback on our work! Stop by our support groupchat to get in touch, or leave a message on our community site.
