Openfire Meetings for Music Collaboration

$
0
0

Openfire Meetings has been most useful during this current global Covid-19 lockdown as a tool for conducting online meetings and sharing digital content. Despite the low latency real-time audio and video it provides for multiple participants in the meetings, it is seemingly un-useable for music teacher/students or musicians trying to practise, jam or improvise together.

There are a number of reasons for this, but the easiest to fix is that the web browser WebRTC connection is configured by default to process human voice in mono with acoustic microphones and speakers. Effects like echo cancellation are added to improve the voice conversation quality and are unsuitable for music which requires stereo. There is also the issue of enough network bandwidth for high quality audio and video at the same time.
image
To overcome these two issues in Openfire Meetings, enable the above features.

With echo cancellation disabled, you have to monitor the music with headphones and with video disabled, you have to communicate with chat/messaging. You also have to follow a few more tips to reduce latency like prefering Ethernet cables over WIFI, using a good pro-grade low-latency USB sound module and not the internal speakers/microphone unless you own a Mac.

If you do manage to get an online jam session going, please let me know. I would love to compare your setup with mine.

Spark 2.9.0 Released

$

0

The Ignite Realtime community is happy to announce the availability of Spark version 2.9.0!

Note that this version has a lot of changes, especially in certificates management area. We suggest to first test it on a small batch of test machines before deploying it to all users.

2.9.0 was long time in the making, so the list of changes is rather long. To mention a few: a new certificate management system that was long overdue, migration to Maven (instead of Ant), HTTP File Upload plugin support, new Smack library version and many other bug fixes and improvements.

A few plugins are currently not working because they use old libraries not available for Maven: Spellchecker, OTR. During the poll on this website most users told us that they are not using these plugins.

We are thankful to all the contributors and Google Summer of Code students who provided their patches to help us release this version. And we encourage developers to get involved with Spark project by providing feedback in the forums or submitting pull requests on our GitHub page.

Here is the list of contributors to this release:
@guus
@Alameyo
Michael Klein
@speedy
@flow
@Dele_Olajide
Alexander198961
Manassé Ngudia
@wroot

Vipin Raj

New Openfire plugin to help reduce spam!

$
0
0

The Openfire community is happy to announce the immediate availability of a new plugin: the blacklist spam plugin.

With the growing popularity of XMPP-based solutions, we’re also seeing an increase of a less desirable application of XMPP: the distribution of unsolicited messages over instant messaging (SPAM, or SPIM).

In order to help our Openfire community combat known spam, we have now released a new plugin the “Spam blacklist” plugin. This is configured with a URL that is used to lookup addresses of known SPAM distributors and block all messages sent by these addresses.

By default, the plugin is configured to read from a blacklist that is hosted on the igniterealtime.org website, and block all messages sent by any user on a domain listed there. The blacklist hosted by the Ignite Realtime community is a periodically updated copy of the list that is curated by the https://github.com/JabberSPAM/blacklist project. You can help combat spam by contributing to that project!

In the next few hours, the plugin will pop up in the list of available plugins on all Openfire instances. Alternatively, you can manually download and install the plugin from its archive page.

Openfire Monitoring plugin version 2.1.0 has been released

$
0
0

The Ignite Realtime community is happy to announce that version 2.1.0 of the Monitoring plugin has been released!

This release is mainly a bugfix release. Message archiving functionality has been improved (fixes have been applied for both XEP-0136 and XEP-0313), full text search has been added to the personal message archives of users, and a variety of smaller bug fixes have been applied.

In this release, the feature of retrieving messages ‘out of order’ has been removed.

The new version of the plugin will become available for installation in the admin console of your instance of Openfire in the next few hours. Alternatively, it can be downloaded from its archive page right now.

Note that for instances that have a lot of archived messages in their database, the initial load of this plugin might require a significant amount of time, as some database updates will be executed. For reference: it took our test instance, that has approximately 11 million archived messages in an external database approximately 9 minutes to perform this update.

Ohùn - A new Openfire plugin for voice chat

$
0
0

The Ignite Realtime community is happy to announce the availability of Ohùn, a new plugin for Openfire.

Ohùn is the Yoruba word for voice and is a simple audio conferencing solution for Openfire using the Kraken WebRTC client and server.

It is for remote teams who can use it everyday to communicate and collaborate all day long without the need to show their faces or any other video. With the absence of video, it ensures high quality audio for the conversation most of the time, even with more than 10 participants.

If you are a remote worker, tired of daily video conference meetings and wish to experience some of the spontaneous discussions with colleagues and team members just listening to each other while working on the same project, then give Ohùn a test and let me know what you think. You call mute yourself, selectively mute noisy peers or even mute everyone when you are busy.

Openfire 4.6.0 is released

$
0
0

The Ignite Realtime Community is elated to be able to announce the release of Openfire version 4.6.0!

This release is the first non-patch release in 10 months, which brings a healthy amount of new features, as well as bug fixes.

I’d like to explicitly thank the many people in the community that have supported this release: not only were a significant amount of code contributions provided, the feedback that we get in our chatroom and on our community forums is of great value to us!

Highlights of this release include extensively improved XMPP protocol support, particularly around Pubsub and PEP and better compatibility with higher-end encryption parameters out-of-the-box, which should particularly benefit environments that make heavy use of server-to-server federation.

This release includes experimental support for federated multi-user chat for constrained environments (as defined in XEP-0289). This feature aims to reduce the dependency on highly reliable, high volume network connectivity.

The complete changelog contains approximately 80 issues that have been resolved in this release.

We invite you to give this release a try. The process of upgrading from an earlier version is as lightweight as ever. It is outlined in the Openfire upgrade guide. Please note that, if desired, a significant amount of professional partners is available that can provide commercial support for upgrading, customization, or other services.

We’re always happy to hear about your experiences, good or bad! Please consider dropping a note in the community forums or hang out with us in our web support groupchat.

You can find Openfire release artifacts on the download page. These are the the applicable sha1sums:

Ignite Realtime Issue Tracker Migration to Atlassian Cloud

$
0
0

The Ignite Realtime community has been happily using tools provided by Atlassian over the years thanks to their generous no-cost licensing to Open Source development projects like ours. These tools include issue tracking by Jira, user management by Crowd, and continuous integration by Bamboo. These tools run within our AWS Cloud presence kindly supported by Surevine. You may be aware the Atlassian recently announced a move to discontinue self-hosted Jira installs in favor of their Jira Cloud offering. Generously, they are making this service free for projects like us to use.

So we have migrated our Jira instance to the Atlassian Cloud and you can now find our issue tracker at https://igniterealtime.atlassian.net. Our previous URL will automatically redirect to this cloud website and thankfully, previous URLs referenced in various places will continue to function.

If you have any issues accessing Jira, please chime in here or direct message me via this very online forum. Thanks again to Atlassian for offering this valuable service to the Open Source Community.

The Ignite Realtime community is happy to announce the availability of Openfire Pàdé v1.0.2.

This release has a new feature that enables Jitsi Meet participants to share their screen cursor positions and mouse clicks. See this feature request for more details.

image
Jitsi Meet is updated to build 4383 and this may be the last upgrade with Jitsi JVB1. Openfire Meetings (ofmeet plugin) cannot proceed to JVB2 until this issue is fixed. Consequently, this issue will remain outstanding, causing Jitsi Meet mobile to stop working with Openfire Meetings.
